# 1 Clement collation record

## Result

The reading edition contains the complete salutation, chapters 1–65, and all 393
numbered sections. It has been collated against J. B. Lightfoot's translation in
the 1891 Lightfoot–Harmer volume, printed pp. 57–85 (PDF pp. 73–101).

This is a normalized reading edition, not a diplomatic transcription. The source
provider's readable spelling and punctuation—such as “honor” for “honour” and
“steadfast” for “stedfast”—are retained. Substantive wording follows the printed
witness where the provider transcription differs.

## Method

1. The importer verifies that the salutation and chapters 1–65 occur in order and
   that section numbering is continuous within every chapter.
2. The imported text was independently compared with the CCEL Lightfoot text. The
   two digital witnesses agree word-for-word apart from a displaced provider gloss
   and the same small family of inherited transcription errors.
3. The exact 1891 scan was rendered at 220 dpi, and OCR was produced for all 29
   pages containing 1 Clement.
4. Every reading-text word token was aligned with the scan OCR. Every nontrivial
   mismatch, plus every longer unmatched span, was then checked visually against
   the page image. OCR damage, running heads, line-end divisions, spelling variants,
   and genuine wording differences were classified separately.
5. Genuine corrections are applied by the importer from an explicit ledger. The
   import fails if the expected provider reading is absent, preventing a future
   upstream change from being overwritten silently.

The repeatable alignment aid is `scripts/collate-first-clement.py`. It deliberately
does not alter text: OCR output is evidence for locating a possible discrepancy,
not authority for an automatic correction.

## Material findings

The collation records 28 correction operations. Most are obvious slips (“invite
thus” → “inviteth us,” “worlds” → “works,” “councils” → “counsels”). Two places
restore wording absent from the provider transcription:

- 57:5 restores “when anguish and beleaguerment come upon you. For it shall be”.
- 59:3 restores “who scatterest the imaginings of nations”.

At 4:5, a brace-delimited alternative translation supplied by the digital provider
is excluded from Lightfoot's reading text because it does not occur there in the
1891 witness. Every adopted reading, its provider reading, and its printed-page
basis is recorded in `data/lightfoot-1891.json` under
`transcription.editorialCorrections`.

## Reproducibility boundary

The repository does not retain the large public-domain scan or generated OCR.
The edition data identifies the scan by its stable Internet Archive identifier and
page range. A future audit can render those pages and run the alignment aid again.
