# Text, rights, and collation

Base: J. B. Lightfoot’s translation in *The Apostolic Fathers*, edited and completed
by J. R. Harmer (London: Macmillan, 1891), pp. 177–181. The 1891 translation is
public domain in the United States. No modern translation is reproduced here.

The [Early Christian Writings transcription](https://www.earlychristianwritings.com/text/polycarp-lightfoot.html)
is a transcription provider, not a critical edition. Its complete retrieved HTML
is pinned in `collation/source-provider.snapshot` for audit, not served as a reader
page. The general [additional Fathers collection introduction](https://www.earlychristianwritings.com/fathers/introduction.html)
states a public-domain policy for contributed material; that statement is not a
blanket license for the site’s modern commentary or design. Our reading text derives
from the public-domain printed translation.

The exact [1891 scan](https://archive.org/download/apostolicfathers00lighuoft/apostolicfathers00lighuoft.pdf)
is the same witness used for First Clement. PDF pages 193–197 correspond to printed
pages 177–181. All five page images were inspected on October 7, 2026. The importer
preserves the provider’s section labels (the printed English pages number chapters),
modernized spelling, capitalization and punctuation, except five recorded corrections:

| Section | Provider | Adopted from print | Print page |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7:2 | The Spirit is indeed willing | The spirit indeed is willing | 179 |
| 10:2 | that your good works | that from your good works | 180 |
| 10:3 | the name of the Lord be blasphemed | the name of the Lord is blasphemed | 180 |
| 11:2 | the judgment of the Lord, Nay | the judgment of the Lord. Nay | 180 |
| 12:2 | Himself the [Son of God | Himself, the [Son of] God | 181 |

HTML presentation, including quotation italics, is removed; entities are decoded
and whitespace collapsed. This is a readable edition, not a typographic facsimile.
In particular, the printed bracketed expression in 12:2 is retained rather than
silently settled. The spoken version removes only the bracket characters in a
reversible normalization ledger.

## Transmission and interpretation sources

- Lightfoot–Harmer, pp. 166–167: Greek manuscript break in chapter 9; Latin version;
limited Syriac quotations of chapter 12; Eusebius’s preservation of chapter 13.
This older introduction’s manuscript census is not presented as current.
- Eusebius, *Church History* 3.36.13–15: chapter 9 quotation (§13), followed by the
  chapter 13 excerpts (§§14–15). [Accessible translation](https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/250103.htm).
Eusebius’s quotation is an independent transmission witness, not an independent
eyewitness confirmation of events described by Polycarp.
- [Richardson, *Early Christian Fathers*, introduction to Polycarp](https://www.ccel.org/ccel/richardson/fathers.vi.iii.i.html),
discussion of transmission and Harrison: chapter 13’s final sentence is absent
from the Greek quotation; the request for news does not compel the inference
that Ignatius was alive. This mid-twentieth-century discussion supplies an
argument, not a claim about current scholarly consensus.
- [Paul Foster, “Polycarp’s Teaching,” pp. 7 and 19–20](https://www.pure.ed.ac.uk/ws/portalfiles/portal/135892256/Foster_Polycarp_s_Teaching.pdf):
explains Harrison’s reconstruction and situates the letter in community life.
Harrison’s early covering note is chapter 13, possibly also 14; chapters 1–12
would then be later. We preserve the received order and do not assign separate
  dates to these reconstructed units.
- [Timothy B. Sailors, review of Holmes’s third edition, BMCR 2009.07.08](https://bmcr.brynmawr.edu/2009/2009.07.08):
cautions against perpetuating outdated Greek and Latin manuscript counts.

The edition’s “Greek manuscript” labels refer to textual witnesses behind the
translation, not to a claim that we have freshly translated or critically edited
those manuscripts. Chapters 10–12 and 14 are Latin-dependent; 13:2’s final sentence
is Latin-only. Limited Syriac quotations do not fill the entire Greek lacuna.

## Reproduction and review limits

`python3 scripts/import-polycarp.py` regenerates the exact JSON from the snapshot.
The structural verifier checks sequence, correction application, balanced brackets,
normalization reversibility, and the correspondence of the existing evidence
excerpts. Visual comparison is an agent review, not a second human’s sign-off.
Do not copy First Clement’s “independently reproduced” status into this edition.

A second comparison used fresh Apple Vision OCR of the five page images. All 25
word-level candidates were reviewed against the images: nine retained spelling or
hyphenation differences and sixteen OCR errors, with zero unresolved candidates.
The raw OCR, candidates, decisions and source hashes are retained in `collation/`.
Regenerate candidates with `python3 scripts/collate-polycarp.py`. This is a separate
OCR check within the same agent review, not independent human reproduction.
